CURT's 45149 is a cushioned ball mount: a 2-5/16" ball on a 2" shank with a rubber cushion built into the ball itself. On a rough road the cushion absorbs the jolt that would otherwise pass straight from the trailer tongue into the truck's frame, and it takes the shock out of hard braking and hard acceleration too, which is what saves the tow vehicle's rear suspension and brakes over a long haul. There is no airbag and no bearing to service; a grease zerk is the only maintenance. The sway tab gives a friction sway-control bar somewhere to anchor.
