Receiver hitches and plug-in wiring for BMW X models and sedans

Choosing the right BMW hitch
Match the year range and body in the title, including xDrive where it is named. A 1-1/4 inch receiver on a 3 or 5 Series is for a bike rack, not a trailer; a 2 inch Class 3 or 4 on an X3 or X5 handles a utility trailer, small boat or tent trailer. Common questions
What class hitch does a BMW X3 need?
A Class 3 with a 2 inch receiver, listed by CURT and Draw-Tite for the 2011 to 2026 X3 and X4. A Class 3/4 is also listed for 2011 to 2018.
Do I need 4-flat or 7-way wiring on a BMW?
A 4-flat for a trailer with lights only, which is what every BMW harness here provides. A 7-way adds brake and charge circuits and is not listed for any BMW.
Does a BMW need a brake controller?
Only when the trailer has electric brakes. Each province sets a weight above which trailer brakes are mandatory, and a tandem-axle trailer behind an X5 with a Class 4 hitch may be over it.
Is there a hitch for the BMW iX that does not show?
